Cihan Tuğal is Professor of Sociology at UC Berkeley. His first book, Passive Revolution: Absorbing the Islamic Challenge to Capitalism (Stanford University Press, 2009), studied pro-capitalist Islam and its popularisation among the poor. In his second book, The Fall of the Turkish Model: How the Arab Uprisings Brought Down Islamic Liberalism (Verso, 2016), Tuğal analysed Islamic movements and regimes in Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia and Iran. His third book, Caring for the Poor (Routledge, 2017), discussed liberalism’s uneasy relationship to charitable ethics. Tuğal has also published research on American, Turkish, Eastern European, and South and Southeast Asian politics, eco-social dynamics, and social movements in scholarly journals, as well as in newspapers, political journals, and print and e-magazines such as Jacobin, New Left Review, New Politics, OpenDemocracy, The Guardian, Spectre, and Jadaliyya, and written extensively in Turkish.
