Arundhati Roy is the author of The God of Small Things (1997), which won the Booker Prize for Fiction in 1997 and became the best-selling book by a non-expatriate Indian author. Her second novel, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, appeared in 2017. A third novel, Mother Mary Comes to Me, finalist for the Kirkus Prize, is forthcoming with Simon & Schuster in September 2025. In 2024 she was awarded the PEN Pinter Prize. Roy is also a prolific essayist, from The End of Imagination (1993) through Azadi: Freedom, Fascism, Fiction (2020), and an influential political activist involved in social and environmental causes.
